Throughout August, you are invited to join us in Solihull town centre to take a step back in time through images and insights into what Solihull looked like going back to the early 19th century. Solihull BID has teamed up with Touchwood, The Core Library and SMBC to bring you ‘A Postcard From Solihull’. There are a range of activities involved for everyone.

Image trail

Follow our trail in our booklet and visit 22 locations to re-visit the past, through images. McDonald’s visitors will see that they are munching burgers on the site of the old Post Office and Liv’s is where the old Mill Lane Boys School once stood. Along with this there will be a full High Street image taken in 1948 which will be displayed in Touchwood showing a very different picture from the town centre we see today.

Cuckoo in the Nest Trail

Researchers at the Library discovered a game played in the town centre many years ago. Children are encouraged to follow a trail to find items in shop windows which do not belong there, hence the title ‘Cuckoo in the Nest’. Follow the trail and if you can identify the rogue items, you could be in with the chance to win a £50 gift card for The Entertainer.

Share your memories with us

Take a trip down memory lane and stir those nostalgic thoughts throughout August this year. We want you to share your memories too and you will be able to fill in a postcard in Touchwood at the memory area on Poplar Arcade. We can then share your memories with others and preserve them for posterity at The Core Library. The memory zone will be located on Poplar Arcade in Touchwood.

Old Fashioned Games

The Core gallery area will also be home to some fabulous old fashioned games. Get the family together to remember some of the old favourites.

History Walks

You’ll also have the chance to take part in a guided tour through the heart of Solihull ‘village’, taking you on a journey through history for an hour. The walk is pedestrianised throughout and is suitable for wheelchair users, to book and find more information go to www.facebook.com/solihullcentrallibrary
