A few weeks ago saw the launch of a new initiative to help support the independent hospitality sector in Solihull. Online directory, home-dine.co.uk, has been created to connect local restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and selected retailers to the wider community as they adapt to operating under new guidelines. The idea was conceived by local couple Graham Jones and Marianne Kelly, whilst looking for quality food and drink that could be delivered or collected during lockdown.
Co-founder Marianne Kelly says: “The pandemic has been devastating for so many local businesses, so we made a decision to support our community as much as we could by shopping locally. Initially we struggled to find outlets offering services which had a collection or delivery option, but over the weeks we discovered marvellous stores who had adapted to these testing circumstances. The food and service we have tried has been amazing! So, we decided to build on this local shopping spirit and let the wider community know what is on our doorstep and also help establishments to promote their offers and services for free. We call it Home Dine”.
Co-founder Graham Jones added: “Using independent shops such as those featured on our website drives about 13 times more income into our immediate economy, which could help Solihull recover financially from the impact of lockdown. Research from the Centre for Local Economic Strategies suggests that for every £1 spent, approximately 65p stays local, compared to just 5p in many cases when buying from a national retailer or website. If each household increased their spend by just £10 per week to support our local businesses, rather than national stores or websites, it could drive an estimated extra £20m into our economy”.
The home-dine.co.uk website features a handpicked collection of more than 90 of the top local pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and local produce retailers that are serving our community through delivery or takeaway services. As physical distancing restrictions relax over the coming weeks, the platform will continue to connect services to customers who want to either dine out or enjoy the very best food and beverage experiences the area has to offer, at home.
