Solihull-based shopping centre, Mell Square, has joined forces with youth homelessness charity, St Basils, to host its first Gift Donation Station on Saturday 14th December and Saturday 11th January from 10am-4pm.

Taking place at 50 Drury Lane (next to GANT), shoppers will have the opportunity to donate and regift presents as part of the Gift Donation Station. People are encouraged to donate thoughtful Christmas gifts for people aged 16-25 or a ‘starter pack’ – filled with essential items that will help a young person move into new accommodation.

For those wanting to donate a starter pack, they are requested to gift the items in a packed box and to label what standard it is. There are three different standards of starter pack. Bronze starts with items like crockery, kitchen utensils, a bath towel and blanket. Silver builds on this with the addition of bedding (must be new), basic toiletries, cleaning supplies, long-life packets and tins of food. A Gold standard starter pack offers all of the above, as well as pots and pans, tea bags, biscuits, bin liners and a bag for life.

Rob Hemus, asset director at IM Properties, owners of Mell Square said: “We’re proud to partner with such a worthwhile charity and hope that our Mell Square shoppers’ donations can help make a difference to the young people St Basils supports.”

Barrie Hodge, head of fundraising and communications at St Basils, said: “Most of us would take essential items for granted, however for a vulnerable young person, they are just what they need to make their new space feel like a home. We want to thank Mell Square and its shoppers for this opportunity to help the many young people who are at risk in the region.”

St Basils works with over 4,000 young people aged 16 to 25 annually who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The charity aims to help them find and keep a home, grow their confidence and give them the opportunities and skills needed to make the transition to independent living.
