This October, Touchwood will be showing its support for the National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour, to help make its shopping experience even easier for people with autism.
For the first hour of trade between 5th to 12th October, the centre will be further enhancing its autism-friendly experience for its guests by taking simple steps such as dimming the lights and turning down music, to help raise awareness of how small changes can make a big difference for autistic people and their families when out and about.
Tony Elvin, General Manager at Touchwood, comments: “We understand that noise and large public spaces can sometimes be stressful and overwhelming for some of our guests, which is why we are delighted to be supporting the National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour for the second year running.
“At Touchwood we take pride in continually working hard to ensure the centre is accessible and welcoming for all. For example, our weekly ‘Quiet Hour,’ where lights in all main areas of the centre are dimmed, music turned is off and tannoy announcements are kept to a minimum, has been well received since its launch over a year ago by guests who need or prefer a more peaceful shopping environment.
“Our support of the National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour campaign is just the next step in helping to create a long-term environment suitable for all our guests, and we look forward to continuing to further enhance our offering to ensure everyone feels welcome.”
Hilary McGlynn from Autism West Midlands, said: “The changes made by Touchwood to make the centre more accessible to autistic people and others who find such environments to be challenging is to be commended. Autism Hours and quiet times make a real difference to the day to day lives of autistic people and their families. Autism West Midlands has been pleased to support to Touchwood in their plans by offering advice and training to staff.”
